Vizio TV problem, picture is black and white, but menu and apps is color, the moment you choose playback is turns black and white. How can I fix this?

What I have found, that is, if the quick fixes mentioned previously do not work or apply to your situational details and/or specificity, is that the Nand Chip needs replacement. These are special pre-programmed chips that are soldered to your main board. If you are electronically inclined in this fashion, you can get it done for around $35... alternatively one could just purchase and replace the entire main board...or send it in to the shop. Labor and parts will put you through the ringer, may not be worth it. Just spend 25 on a new chip and read/watch some videos and do it yourself. Save money while learning a new skill...🤷js
Guys. I had this problem as well. Just unplug the TV from the wall, and let the capacitors drain of all residual power. (wait a minute or two, press the power button on the TV as well.) Then plug the TV back into the wall. Then of course turn on the TV. This should reset the HDCP Error and you should have full color again on all HDMI inputs. Source: It happened to me and I knew how to fix it. TV works fine now. Hopefully this has been helpful.

@Stealth Dark You may need to have your TV unplugged for a longer amount of time, and also turn off power to your input devices (xbox, forestick, etc..) then before you plug the TV in make sure to hold down that POWER ON button on the TV for at least ten seconds.
Unfortunately didn’t work for me. Would you happen to know what I would have to replace to regain color? Is there a repair kit that would fix this? None of the kits I found mentioned 3D?
Same issue here replaced the main board and still black and white
EASY FIX. My Vizio e500i-a1 hdmi ports were only showing black and white screens. Cable box, ps4, Switch etc. TV menu and TV Netflix had color. I tried everything just short of ordering replacement parts. Basically, how I fixed mine, is I took the back off of the TV (way too many screws) found the motherboard connected to the hdmi ports. Unplugged everything, used some air in a can to get rid of any dust, and replugged them all back into the corresponding plugs. I noticed one of the plugs was slightly loose while unplugging. I think that was the issue. Plugged in the power cord and cable box. Tested the TV and BAM she was working in full color again. Pretty easy fix just time consuming with the amount of screws on the back of the TV.
On the M3D470, the HDMI ports are soldered into the main board...nothing to unplug.
I just did that, no luck. The weird thing is, mine will sometimes work the next day after being used for a long period and left to cool. I think hot air flowing the board might work, but it would only be temporary.

Nyla Smith had to replace the main board on it.
@@halomaster1746 only one, that's what vizio customer support recommended to do. You'll have to open tv in the back and look for some sort of serial number/model number on it and find it online somewhere, so you can buy it.

Issue just cropped up on my M3D550SR model. Happens sporadically and picture still looks great when it decides to display color- This makes the prospect of replacing it suck more. Have HDMI cables connected and t.v. hasn't been moved since mounting it years ago so I'm guessing it is the board, not the connection. I suppose that about 9 or 10 years is all you can expect from a Vizio.
Unfortunately happened on my like 2 years in. Had to buy a new board for around $100+, but haven't had a problem since
@@mralexbabii Thanks. 99% certain that is what happened with mine. Ended up selling it for $40 and cutting my losses, given how cheaply you can find a decent 55" t.v. these days. The "smart" features were outdated garbage- ran slower than an original Kindle Fire ui, and my wife always complained about how it took a few seconds to start up for basic t.v. viewing anyways. Probably the last Vizio I buy for a while.

Did not work for me I guess the other main board could also be bad
I just got a Vizio M series and realize for some reason the Vivid picture mode had color all the way down I just turn the damn color up

Did you ever determine what the cause of this issue is? We are having the exact same issue now with our 3 year old Vizio.
Paul K I have the same problem! So frustrating, I called vizio and they informed me that another company said that it was not worth fixing. They also informed me that Amazon doesn’t support this tv anymore, which makes me think that shouldn’t be because it’s installed on there and that almost seems like I should get a refund on this old TV that has Amazon on it and it won’t work on it.Seems like maybe it has some kind of a software issue? Something that’s meant to go out after a couple years so you have to go buy a new TV? Or is it fixable?
If it has stuff like PiP (Picture in Picture) or P&P , where you can say watch a movie on the left, and a tv show on the right, try fidgitting with that. I had this problem recently with a Sony television. HDMI ports all of a sudden showed black and white like it was a 1950s tv. It fixed my problem and if Vizio is Sony in disguise it can solve this one as well.

Same issue. Mine is either black and white or tye die colors. If its tie dye colors I can usually sort through the different picture modes until the color comes back. I am curious if the vga is affected by this. Btw, my vizio is 5 years old.

Looks like the manufacturer programmed the internal color chip to start malfunctioning after some years you purchase your TV 😂😂😂 in order to force people to purchase one new tv again 😮
The Saturation/Color is set to minimum. Did you try going into the TVs settings and looking for Saturation/Color? If that isn't the problem, maybe it's the wires. Is the yellow wire in the green input? If your using Y/Pb/Pr instead of AV, you might want to get a converter for that. I know that my sisters TV VCR combo was color on TV, but played and recorded tapes in Black-And-White. That TV is gone, but if it I still had it, I may ask the same thing about the VCR.
Never mind. I didn't finish watching the video until after I posted, and you showed that everything that has to do with VIDEO was black and white. Yes, the color setting is 50...

I did in 17 minutes. You can go to shopjimmy.com they have video tutorials, but even without video it's pretty easy.
i replaced the main board but now its stuck on the main logo when you first turn it on
Where did you buy your main board? Maybe you should return it. It looks like something wrong with new one too.
well, heres the thing, it was my friends tv, he tried to fix it with the new board, but like i said nothing happened, so i took over the tv to see if i can fix it, we put the old board in, and the only problem is, all the inputs are in black and white, so we are trying to see if we can fix that. was that confusing.
